These types of threads are helpful to this community as we can go through and see what's available and what we should strive to build.
My favourite is this:
The other buildings, while clean and pretty, seem cold and too square. Different takes of the house where RichardS would apparently want to live can create a very good community feel with ample street-front interaction.

Hey Ian, is that second one you posted from Austin?
^Dallas.
I don't know about this one. The nuclear explosions in every other unit and the ford escape on the far left that looks like it's missing it's front axle have me a bit concerned.
Otherwise, they're all beautiful buildings. I like the lower rise condo/commercial ones as a stepping stone.
Hey everyone this is my first time posting, i've been creeping this website since 2007 though haha. I thought these would look neat, imagine the rossdale area with this kinda building looking over the river! I also like them because they are basic buildings but use coloured lights to make their buildings look nice. Parkades don't have to be ugly either, imagine these as a parkades (even thought that'd be a bit expensive). (also sorry if these pictures are a little big, im still not familiar with posting stuff)
In addition to those I also think Edmonton could use a NICE set of twin towers:

this is a condo beside our families in vancouver.... nothing amazing, but would put most in our city to shame.
sad really
![]()
^something like that is what i would like to see on the commonwealth lands or beside the holiday inn downtown
Hell, even where Urbia could be located... or somewhere near the new EPCOR tower.
ya they're pretty amazing! and they have a nice distinct look
a small dose of these...

In favour of Architecture that is of our time and place.
Low rise, nice interaction with the street. Cool and simple design.
Skyscrapers are so 20th century.

We need a mix of both... tall skyscrapers and more 12-20 floor highrises too.

those palm trees come with the pyramid?![]()
new grand buildings would be great. but right now i'd settle for some good, if not interesting, residential construction.

^sexy.
NO MORE PYRAMIDS!!!
A project like the Boston Art Museum by Diller Scofidio would be fantastic. In our case, perhaps used as an interpretive centre celebrating our river valley and the history of the North Saskatchewan River, along with its purpose as major transportation route for early settlements and its role during the Fur Trade.
Something like this is more meaningful to Edmonton than building a few more tall skyscrapers, and lends a certain element of civic pride.

Lol thats like the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas... it had ugly rooms -.- I would never stay there againPALAZZO!!!
This picture is my absolute favorite one. I basically love everything that is futuristic. Another thing I like about it is that they are twin towers. What really convinces me about it is the little lake in front of it. I like the combination of nature and modern architecture.
GoMod- yes yesYES to the Leslie L. Dan Pharm bldg. I freakin love that building.
I often sit on an overpass bridge in the far SW (where I live) and look at the skyline and it looks so damn short. We need a mile high tower. This one would be fine by me

as a piece of sculpture, these might well be named "pair of blue slugs upright" although i don't think they're that original - i'm pretty sure we have a pair of salt and pepper shakers in a box somewhere that look exactly like this right down to the colour of the glass and their sitting in a woven metal mesh base...![]()

Couldn't help but notice the number of buildings on the waterfront or in a coastline city. I know as far as clothing goes, notwithstanding utilitarian concerns, there's genarally a certain aesthetic demanded by physical location, i.e. white pants and a body of water (though occasionally considered fashionable by some, I think anyone wearing white pants in a city like Edmonton at any time of year who is not in or about to get on a boat is committing a major faux paux), hats and horse racing Ascot/Kentucky Derby, cowboy boots and Texas/Calgary/Ranch (not so much these days, but still look stupid on many people here - but not me), etc...
Isn't it sort of the same for Architecture, especially given the long term nature of the design, and size of the building. Some of the buildings in Vancouver, though really nice, belong in Vancouver - not here, IMO.
Does Edmonton's physical location (and related weather) demand any aesthetic? Do we have a style? If we do, are there examples of where it went right, and where someone completely missed the mark? Douglas Cardinal - Space Sciences, Gene Dub/Muttart - Pyramids?
aka Jim Good; "The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up." - Steven Wright
i think we are still developing our style and need to look at cities like vancouver and seattle for examples.
----
Vancouver and Seattle both have some great buildings... but so does NY, Toronto, Montreal, etc etc.

A less tropical version of these on the Muni lands once it is closed:

Yes! I like.
this would be pretty cool

these cities have their own pacific nw style which we shouldn't try to emulate IMO. i don't think we should continue our 'rocky mountain' pyramid theme either. there are no mountains here! maybe the 'prairie style' is what we should aim for... i don't know.
i'd like to see a stephen holl bldg here. (actually don't care who the architect is, as long as they use that channeled glass.) it would look awesome downtown, glowing white in the dead of winter.
some type of interactive facade, or building projection
i recommend muting this video of building projections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34Ikh...layer_embedded
How bout this big one for our new arena?![]()
Nothing "new" about it, but I have always liked the Lloyd's building in London:
Mind you, I like looking at refineries as well
I'll take that over Vancover "NW Pacific" architecture anyday. I expect it would be hated if Edmonton had built it though, as not as much "glass curatin wall" as a tower in Vancover. Here's a wiki page on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyds_building
I love the fact that it "produces its own energy". This is a very clever way to place the turbines and a clever way to build the building. I think this concept is fantastic.
^Something like that would look awesome for the Arena / Entertainment complex, it might even "play" on the look of our Refineries (which would fit in well with Oilers). Katz likes modernist I think (at least, judging by his home), so maybe possible?
The Outside of the Loyds building is nothing compared to the Inside!
Here are some that could be interesting to see here.
LRT is our future, time to push forward.
Great examples Edmcowboy11... I like those a lot.

A huge entertainment complex smack dab in the middle of downtown edmonton
imagine this on the BP or commonwealth site...
from UT
^ all i can say is WOW! that is incredibly and unbelievably amazing.
It is chic, simple, elegant, and i love the dip in the sidewalk/podium area.
^Something like this would be very nice right along Jasper Ave where BP's is right now.

I like this one proposed in Milwaukee. Image from SSP.

^love it... kinda art deco moderno.
put that on 105st/102ave and smoke it
wow that's nice too! makes you feel kinda sad that icon or quest are our "best" highrise condos.
^I like this one too. How bout seeing this building on the site downtown where the staples store is currently located or the parking lot accross the street.
LRT is our future, time to push forward.
Remind you of anything?![]()
Gone............................and very quickly forgotten may I add.
This reminds me of Gehry's Disney Concert hall in LA
Hurrah! Our version (which will apparently house art, not musicians) opens Jan. 30
Looking forward.
I would like to see some taller buildings in edmonton, we will use ^ as a start
^ lol, our tallest is like the height of the podium

^ours was based off of it... FYI. I had the pleasure of visiting Boston for Greenbuild 08' and while some might not like the building there, it works very well to terrace down to one of their their major tourist attractions.
??? it's a disaster IanO, in spite of that nearby "major tourist attraction". ours at least recognizes that it has some urban edges at grade and there was some attempt to provide some human scale and landscaping to them (albeit the loading dock/parking entry is probably the worst example of that with the sunken park north of the aga probably the best).

Our law courts building sucks in comparison with the long-lost courthouse.

No, it is just different
A newby knock off of the original however would very likely be tragic

LA today, Athens tomorrow. I miss E-town.
The tower is cool, but the podium is ugly.
The podium is their first building. I think it's very cool that they preserved their past in that way.
LA today, Athens tomorrow. I miss E-town.
There was a big ad in todays Globe and Mail for a new Condo/Hotel Complex in Regina of all places. prices from $199.000 to "over $1 Million"
To be located at Albert Street and Victoria Avenue.
www.capitalpointe.ca
Looks like it will be pretty snazzy and it's in REGINA! of all places. why oh why? This is what Downtown Edmonton could use a couple of.![]()
^That doesn't look like that tall of a building though, although I do like the look. A bit large of a podium for my taste.
And remember this, nice building, but no matter what, your still living in Regina.
LRT is our future, time to push forward.
looks nice building
This second photo is a perfect fit for quarters area on the east side of downtown
