Now if we can get the " Garlic Breaths" to stop throwing flyers etc into the fountains.

Except isn’t the paint-everything-grey trend at its end?

Ask Maria: What's Next After the Grey Trend? Find out here

Then in 2009, I started talking about the Grey (fresh, clean colours) trend, just a year into blogging.

When clients ask me to specify charcoal for their exterior or for a sofa, sometimes I’ve been known to say “But why aren’t you asking me for brown?”

“Because I don’t like brown”, they would reply.

That’s right, because that trend is OVER. Just a few short years ago, you would have wanted brown.

This is exactly why you shouldn’t paint your house charcoal or install a charcoal kitchen unless you have lots of money and can change it out as soon as you’re bored, which will happen as soon as the trend is REALLY over.

It’s on the fringe of being over already. ...”

It's a bit hard to tell how nice this looks from this picture, but it's easy to see it's an improvement over the old. Of course, that's not hard to do. The original casino was ugly on day one.

Yes, the gas station roof is the state of the art in mall design.

Can't find any confirmation anywhere. Will this mall be bigger than WEM?

Wikipedia shows Nordstrom to open at the location of Sears? Is this correct or just made up?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Edmonton_Mall

The Mall does look better on the interior, though some sections still require new floor tiles (Target/Bay phase area). Maybe in our lifetime they update the exterior all the way.

Renovating the mall will probably just be an ongoing thing for all time- it's too high-traffic and too old to not require constant upkeep and replacing of worn-out tiles. The chances of a "Londonderry"-style revamp are pretty low on a structure of this size. It'll basically be like Disneyland- they fix up one area, and there'll be two more that now require fixing up .

In the Nationsl story above, beginning at 2 min 30 sec, note the comments on the hatred of the original exterior finishing. Those fad(s), which we are seeing in Edmonton, are now dead I guess.

Watch at 2 min 30 sec - Chris Christie’s comments just past get 3 min mark:

I was surprised to see information in Wikipedia for Nordstrom at the Sears location. Nothing has been announced and I think that would be a major announcement for the city of Edmonton. I also don't think Nordstrom would enter our market in such a dead area of the mall. I realize that are doing many upgrades at that end but Nordstrom wouldn't want to be at that end of the mall. I went back into the history at Wikipedia and that information was added before end of November. Any editor can add information and until someone notifies Wikipedia that it is unsubstantiated, nothing is done to correct. There were many false things put on the Londonderry Mall Wikipedia page when they were starting their renovations as well and then it was changed to reflect correct information. I don't doubt that we will get a Nordstrom eventually but just not there. I would imagine that they would also consider the Sears location at Southgate Mall. That would be a prime location.

Unless they are speaking of a Nordstrom Rack. That may be a good location for Nordstrom Rack.

That bit about Nordstrom coming to the Sears space is all conjecture and it reads as such. It's also laughably out of date regarding the Target space since it is already spoken for.

Also, you people do realize that anyone can edit a wikipedia entry, right? That Nordstrom bit could have been entered by someone from C2E or a lurker. It could have been that Chuck Clubine fellow who made that false claim on CTV Morning Live about Macy's coming to WEM. It could have been your neighbor whose cousin's husband works as a janitor at WEM. It's clear that WEM needs a social media person to monitor and correct their wikipedia entry.

I think that end of the mall was dead mainly because Sears, Eatons and, Target were there. If it got better tenants, it might do a lot better. I imagine a consideration for Nordstrom would be the size of space so that Sears space might work well. I think Southgate might work better too, but when out of towners think of Edmonton, WEM is often the first and perhaps only place that comes to mind.

WEM will still be largest in North America, MOA second.

"In addition to West Edmonton, the biggest mall in North America, the family-owned Triple Five Group is also behind the second largest: Mall of America in Minneapolis. This latest project isn't quite as big as those, but it's bigger in ambition"

Made my first trip to the mall of 2018 today, and checked out a few things.

    * That skateboard store/park that used to be the cheap theatre finally closed down- it's had "Closing" signs up for a while, but I guess they were done after Christmas. That was a really long-time tenant, in a big store with a HUGE basement- who's gonna go there now?

    * The mall was absolutely dead- January shopping plus the weekday (usually I come in Saturdays). Only one single person at the Disney Store (this is a place that ROUTINELY had half a dozen people on the weekends), and pretty much everywhere else had the same amount of staff.

    * The Rec Room is so empty on weeknights I don't know why they even bother staying open that late. Maybe a handful of tables with people, and 3-4 groups in the arcade. Compared to the weekend, it's crazy.

    * The Casino entrance looks very "1950s", especially with the circular cut-out on the "Gas Station Roof". The insides are hilariously bad now, because they've shoved all of the slot machines into a black-tarped room while other stuff is being worked on. When is this supposed to be finished, again?

This is the life of the mall. WEM wont pick up till like spring break followed by summer then will die till nov basicly saying this is normal nothing to worry about plus more frozen doll things for you to have to yourself

LOL- I worked in the mall for five years, and have been going here for fifteen- I know quite well the "routine" of post-Christmas doldrums in the mall.

I didn't hear about the skateboard thing- where did you find that info?

You guys are talking about West49, right? I was only in there once a few years ago and I vaguely remember seeing a skate park in this shop. That was probably a neat unique idea at the time though I assume there's liability issues at play.

Went to the mall to check things out again:

    * The "RAAS" local business area was dead and emptied out to catastrophic levels. Took me a bit to notice the "Renovating to serve you better" sign. Renovations on a couple-month-old stretch of shops? It says till April 2018, which is conveniently just enough to miss out on the "dead time" for businesses (post-Christmas till spring). Sounds a bit suspicious, like they just didn't want to have it all be empty, but can't justify mall rents for this dead period.

    * Mall is, again, a dead zone. Even worse than a couple of weeks ago.

    * Sunrise's prices sure are better than HMV's were. I think that might be part of why HMV died- hard to justify the costs of CDs in that market.

    * Crap! I keep forgetting to check if there's actually a real food stand in that "island" in the western food court again. The one that used to be "Georgie's" and then something else for about a month. I swear I saw someone working over there once, but haven't actually seen it.

    * And no, Dark Magnus, I didn't buy any Frozen dolls this time around .

HAHAHAHAHA just kidding. I totally did. 25% off already-discounted Olaf's Frozen Adventure stuff! WOOHOO!!!

Go karts are comming back to wem where the west 49 used to be. Not too sure why since though, the last time we had go karts (where crunch is now) didnt do too well. Scotch and soda closed up shop. Not sure if they are doing a reno or what as there were no signs before hand. Henry singer is also shutting down. Not sure if they are fully pulling out or if they are also doing a reno

Henry Singer's website lists a downtown Calgary & Edmonton location. W E M is gone. An indication that while merchandise quality is there, but consumers nowadays are price aware. Simons could also have hurt both Henry + Scotch & Soda.

Do you mean that island right by the Fat Burger, where they had sinks and stuff set up for the cleaning staff? They're putting in some kind of a juice place. I was there a couple weeks ago and it looked almost ready to go.

People will open businesses they love, regardless of market. Likely won't last and somebody will lose their life savings on it.

The Go Karts that were there we doing quite well when they closed. The mall wanted to jack their rates up, so they decided to close. The Champ Car races were a huge thing for them.

I'm not saying that putting GO Karts in the west 49 area is going to be a huge success, but the previous attempt did not fail.

I'm curious to see if they will be running gas karts or will they try an electric kart. If they are fast enough, it could be some good fun.

As well as the previously mentioned closures of Henry Singer / Scotch & Soda. In phase 1 the Kit & Ace store has been emptied out and the Brooks Brothers clearance store is gone.

I recall the Go Karts a good 15 years ago. At the time they were billed as Canada's fastest indoor go-kart track.

A good add IMO. The Mall needed some attractions beyond retail, especially after the closures of the submarines, bumper boats, Flamigo Bay, Trampoline/Maze, etc.

Go-Karts and rec room add that element.

Wonder how the rec-room is doing relative to it's South Common peer.

  38. #4938

Agreed- all that stuff is pretty good.

The Rec Room appears busy on the weekends, but not weekdays- I hope it does well, as it adds something more to do at the mall after 9 pm. And I still sort of miss Playdium, even though it kind of sucked and had the wrong kind of arcade games .

Wow, REALLY busy day at the mall today. The "Chinese New Year" celebration was going on, so there were a ton of people in the mall. Compared to the past few weeks, this was packed- it was actually difficult to get through the central corridor again. It felt like Christmas!

Yup, Sweet Jezus shows no signs of ever opening. I'm starting to think it's vaporware. The juicer place in the food court isn't open, either- there's just signage, and a bunch of storage.

Oddly, the swimming pool has huge black curtains over all of the windows- were they having issues with people ogling the swimmers or something (not that I've ever done that. At all)? It looks hideous, and it looked like a normal day at the mall in terms of swimming, though the pool was full way past 9 pm, which is unusual. The curtains were inside the pool on the bottom floor, but naturally had to be left outside on the top floor, which meant that people were just opening them to look down anyways .

The RAAS section really needs bigger signage indicating it's renovating- to anyone walking by, it just looks like "failed concept; closing soon".

Not too sure why they need to change the ramp direction in RASS. It looks like they lose more space the way the new ramp heads not gain if thats what their goal was. Thank frack for that ice reno they learned not to get carpet again and are now using the proper tiling system that they should have been using years / decades ago.

Possibly they have fewer tenants moving forward, and so would want to make it look "more full" by having fewer stalls open. Nothing in retail establishments looks worse than having lots of unfilled spaces- it makes things look like a failure.

The way RAAS was, though, it was EXTREMELY packed, with you basically sitting on top of the person manning the "store" if you were inside their booth. I can imagine they'd actually WANT fewer tenants, allowing them to spread out. Not sure what their plan is.

That makes sense. When me and the GF had gone thru during xmas it felt very cramped almost like a bazaar you would see in india or whereever they have those types of things but obvously more fancyerish looking

I'm still waiting for the mirrors around the Santa Maria area to be removed.

The multi-colored lighting on the ceiling looks REALLY tacky. It's bizarre that they'd make such a pretty-looking inner section to the entrance, and then go with "1970s Vegas" for carpeting and lighting.

Nothing much new at the mall today- the ice rink looks pretty much the same as it always did, to me- the differences are probably mechanical. The black curtains were gone from the water park, but there was some late night swimming thing going on.

Sweet Jesus may still be coming to W E M. I was at Southgate yesterday and they have signage up in the food court area announcing an early 2018 opening. As well there was a plumber installing new water lines at the W E M location about 2 weeks ago.

Was at the mall this Saturday, but didn't see anything new. Has anyone seen the interior of the casino, yet? I keep meaning to check it out, but I've had other stuff to do lately. Last I checked, they had a very "temporary" look of just a floor full of machines. I'm wondering when they'll be totally finished with everything.

There always seems to be youth hockey playing in the Ice Palace now. Also, that smoothie stand in the food court looks like it's just being used for storage of something- it's been unchanged for months.

Wonder which other malls in Edmonton Miniso will consider...Kingsway or Southgate seem like a prime target. I'm not even bother hoping for one in CCM.

The one at South Common had their grand opening last week.

It'll be interesting competition for Oomomo at WEM, since they appear to retail fairly similar types of products.

Awesome, I want to check it out. Found this on their website:

MINISO Canada will open between 30 and 50 stores in Canada throughout 2017/2018 with a focus on Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, and the potential to operate as many as 500 Canadian stores in the coming years.
That's a lot of stores. Even 30-50 is a lot of stores, and the potential of 500 is... wow.
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?

OMG!!! YOU GUYS!! YOU GUYS, SERIOUSLY!!!

Sweet Jeezus actually has WORK DONE on the inside! Somebody built a booth! Okay, it's not all done yet, but compared to six months of "Coming Soon!", this is night and day!

Nothing much new going on in the mall. The Disney Store has had a different sale every week since January- they're starting to feel less like "stuff on sale" and more "JEEZ! Get this crap out of our store already!" with all the clearance stuff going on. Anyone who buys stuff at full price in this store is nuts- just wait for the sales.

The Toy Store on the bottom floor is now carrying the REALLY high-end Disney Statues- the same prices you'll find pretty much everywhere (save that convenience store by the Food Court, which charges way less for the same things. It's very weird).

Went around the "West Point" stores and such as well- that Canadian Tire is HUGE on the inside. Poor toy selection, probably owing to the Toys R Us a block away. That TRU is quite well-stocked, considering it's late February.

Finally went into the somewhat-renovated Casino, which still seems to have large amounts of stuff blocked off. The old restaurant/lounge/upstairs section seems to be boarded off (or I just couldn't find it)- it's MUCH more claustrophobic than before, I assume from the conglomerating of machines from all the renos. The floor is still unbelievably tacky (you know, unlike the taste and restrain casinos are famous for). Their restaurant portion is definitely open now.

Observation: The slot machines with the most scantily-clad women advertising them are invariably being played by the oldest of ladies.

TONS of people in the casino, though. I've never seen it this busy on a Saturday night, EVER. At least 200 people, if not more- that's a LOT of people who evidently don't have anything better to do with their time (he says, working on his Mall Review for C2E).

Went to the mall today. Not a lot is different... except, of course, MyPet, which has been shut down following a Humane Society intervention on their animals. Apparently most of their small animals had now counted as "Abandoned" by not... being fed, I guess? This was in the news recently.

Seems kind of sketchy. That MyPet was from the same guys as PJ's Pets, who famously stopped selling puppies, and then rebranded and started selling puppies again, meaning they got them from "puppy mills" instead of licensed breeders. And they had been advertising a "25% off entire store" sale for weeks in the post-Christmas downturn. But the Humane Society suddenly piling in after a routine inspection and taking HUNDREDS of animals at once, while using the publicity to beg the public for donations, is very suspicious. I'm betting both sides are pretty sketchy, here.

What happened is they were unable to pay their rent and the locks were changed and inventory seized as assets to cover debts owed to creditors. The unfortunate part is the assets were live animals. I’m hoping the SPCA were called while the locks were being changed. It’s not like the animals were abandoned without care for days or anything like that.

There hasnt be a pet store next to London Drugs for years its the only one in the mall that is next to chapters.

It's the same company- PJ's Pets. They moved from the LD location to by Chapters, closed, then renovated by giving up space to Chapters. They rebranded to MyPet in Edmonton, but it was the same people.

That's a real shame re: the pet store. As a kid, I used to love walking through the dark underwater/reptilian section of PJ's Pets when it was at the present-day London Drugs spot; always a great way to end a fun day at the mall before going home.

  82. #4982

Yeah, I LOVED going in there. Though the "selling puppies" thing was shady, and they really screwed over the cat rescue people by suddenly booting them out, it was always fun to go to a mall and see animals. Something that seems to be dead in a world of Big Box warehouse Pet Stores.

Remember when the mall was almost a zoo with all the exotic reptiles and birds and animals they kept throughout the mall in spaces where the present day kiosks now occupy?

Now that was a fun time as a kid.

When they finally removed the last of the fish aquariums on the upper floor overlooking the ice palace (currently the best buy mobile and tims area), it was bittersweet.

Yeah, I loved all the exotic stuff- the aquariums were fun to see, and they even had Lemurs and Flamingos for a while! While those enclosures were probably too small for the animals, it was certainly way better than the annoying "Sir? FOR YOU!" people with their kiosks.

Speaking of electronics stores, I think the worst sales experience I ever had was in the electronics shop on what I think was the upper level. I was really young, and didn't realize you shouldn't follow a "follow me!" salesman into the store, because he sat me down and gave me some 15-minute speech on audio equipment, then he and his associates browbeated me for almost an hour, trying to get me to buy their stuff at a huge discount. Complete with bullying tactics and "COME ON, man!" exasperated remarks.

Turns out, the best way to get discounts on things is to not actually want the stuff in the first place (seriously, I was living in HUB Mall at the time; why would I need such high standards on ANYTHING?). I walked away, leaving a bunch of long-faced sales people who never thought to check if I even LIKED audiophile stuff in the first place! I think only a few months later that place closed.

My question is how do we get rid of the "Sir? For you!" or "Can I just ask you a question?" people. Ummmmm NO! I just passed here 2 minutes ago and I already told you NO once. These people are at all malls. Londonderry is just as bad. I cannot stand walking by those stores and kiosks. That ERA Ageless is the WORST!!! I don't want your bar of soap or your $500 skin cream. LEAVE ME ALONE.

Not sure how to get rid of them. They keep coming back like a bad pizza. They seem to thrive on rejection. And yes they are everywhere from high end malls in Orlando to outdoor factory outlets.. They asked me once if they could ask me a question, and when I told them that I was out of answers their head just about exploded. $500 skin cream with 25 cents worth of ingredients.

LOL, I do that half the time and the other half I just pretend to talk to myself, making it sound like a one person argument.

I dont pretend nothing. Most times my walk already makes them intimidated; if theyre aggressive, the stare backs them off. It so annoying when we can see and those choice that they have to push in such manner. The other factor is sanitary concerns especially the cream products etc.

Worst "Kiosk Annoyance" was many years ago, I somehow got roped into sitting in their chair while they displayed something to me. Some head massager thing. When I said I wasn't interested in that, the girl fought with me, then said "Well if you bought it, would you carry it or get a bag?" When I said I'd get a bag, she promptly stuck the thing in a bag then tried to put it in my hands. I was like "WTF?... How is THAT supposed to make me want to buy it?" Telling my friends the story later, they all laughed at the idea - "OH, well now I HAVE to buy it!"

I really have no idea how they make money. I think the only time I've seen a purchase made at a booth was when my sister bought a gift for someone from that dude's "write your name in sand" booth. That was at least a neat little trinket.

That is why they rent island booths as cost is minimal and gamble for success.
