Now if we can get the " Garlic Breaths" to stop throwing flyers etc into the fountains.

Sweet Jesus website still shows WEM location as "coming soon"

Except isn’t the paint-everything-grey trend at its end?

Ask Maria: What's Next After the Grey Trend? Find out here

Then in 2009, I started talking about the Grey (fresh, clean colours) trend, just a year into blogging.

When clients ask me to specify charcoal for their exterior or for a sofa, sometimes I’ve been known to say “But why aren’t you asking me for brown?”

“Because I don’t like brown”, they would reply.

That’s right, because that trend is OVER. Just a few short years ago, you would have wanted brown.

This is exactly why you shouldn’t paint your house charcoal or install a charcoal kitchen unless you have lots of money and can change it out as soon as you’re bored, which will happen as soon as the trend is REALLY over.

It’s on the fringe of being over already. ...”

It's a bit hard to tell how nice this looks from this picture, but it's easy to see it's an improvement over the old. Of course, that's not hard to do. The original casino was ugly on day one.

Yes, the gas station roof is the state of the art in mall design.

Can't find any confirmation anywhere. Will this mall be bigger than WEM?

Wikipedia shows Nordstrom to open at the location of Sears? Is this correct or just made up?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Edmonton_Mall

The Mall does look better on the interior, though some sections still require new floor tiles (Target/Bay phase area). Maybe in our lifetime they update the exterior all the way.

Renovating the mall will probably just be an ongoing thing for all time- it's too high-traffic and too old to not require constant upkeep and replacing of worn-out tiles. The chances of a "Londonderry"-style revamp are pretty low on a structure of this size. It'll basically be like Disneyland- they fix up one area, and there'll be two more that now require fixing up .

In the Nationsl story above, beginning at 2 min 30 sec, note the comments on the hatred of the original exterior finishing. Those fad(s), which we are seeing in Edmonton, are now dead I guess.

Watch at 2 min 30 sec - Chris Christie’s comments just past get 3 min mark:

(Obviously the professor didn’t know much about Edmonton before WEM.)

I was surprised to see information in Wikipedia for Nordstrom at the Sears location. Nothing has been announced and I think that would be a major announcement for the city of Edmonton. I also don't think Nordstrom would enter our market in such a dead area of the mall. I realize that are doing many upgrades at that end but Nordstrom wouldn't want to be at that end of the mall. I went back into the history at Wikipedia and that information was added before end of November. Any editor can add information and until someone notifies Wikipedia that it is unsubstantiated, nothing is done to correct. There were many false things put on the Londonderry Mall Wikipedia page when they were starting their renovations as well and then it was changed to reflect correct information. I don't doubt that we will get a Nordstrom eventually but just not there. I would imagine that they would also consider the Sears location at Southgate Mall. That would be a prime location.

Unless they are speaking of a Nordstrom Rack. That may be a good location for Nordstrom Rack.

That bit about Nordstrom coming to the Sears space is all conjecture and it reads as such. It's also laughably out of date regarding the Target space since it is already spoken for.

Also, you people do realize that anyone can edit a wikipedia entry, right? That Nordstrom bit could have been entered by someone from C2E or a lurker. It could have been that Chuck Clubine fellow who made that false claim on CTV Morning Live about Macy's coming to WEM. It could have been your neighbor whose cousin's husband works as a janitor at WEM. It's clear that WEM needs a social media person to monitor and correct their wikipedia entry.

I think that end of the mall was dead mainly because Sears, Eatons and, Target were there. If it got better tenants, it might do a lot better. I imagine a consideration for Nordstrom would be the size of space so that Sears space might work well. I think Southgate might work better too, but when out of towners think of Edmonton, WEM is often the first and perhaps only place that comes to mind.

WEM will still be largest in North America, MOA second.

"In addition to West Edmonton, the biggest mall in North America, the family-owned Triple Five Group is also behind the second largest: Mall of America in Minneapolis. This latest project isn't quite as big as those, but it's bigger in ambition"

Made my first trip to the mall of 2018 today, and checked out a few things.

    * That skateboard store/park that used to be the cheap theatre finally closed down- it's had "Closing" signs up for a while, but I guess they were done after Christmas. That was a really long-time tenant, in a big store with a HUGE basement- who's gonna go there now?

    * The mall was absolutely dead- January shopping plus the weekday (usually I come in Saturdays). Only one single person at the Disney Store (this is a place that ROUTINELY had half a dozen people on the weekends), and pretty much everywhere else had the same amount of staff.

    * The Rec Room is so empty on weeknights I don't know why they even bother staying open that late. Maybe a handful of tables with people, and 3-4 groups in the arcade. Compared to the weekend, it's crazy.

    * The Casino entrance looks very "1950s", especially with the circular cut-out on the "Gas Station Roof". The insides are hilariously bad now, because they've shoved all of the slot machines into a black-tarped room while other stuff is being worked on. When is this supposed to be finished, again?

This is the life of the mall. WEM wont pick up till like spring break followed by summer then will die till nov basicly saying this is normal nothing to worry about plus more frozen doll things for you to have to yourself

LOL- I worked in the mall for five years, and have been going here for fifteen- I know quite well the "routine" of post-Christmas doldrums in the mall.

I didn't hear about the skateboard thing- where did you find that info?

You guys are talking about West49, right? I was only in there once a few years ago and I vaguely remember seeing a skate park in this shop. That was probably a neat unique idea at the time though I assume there's liability issues at play.
