I'm a little confused with all the tactics reported here. I just either ignore them, or say no thanks and move on. Works 100% of the time.

That's not how permits work, at least not without a time machine.

For me, it is intrusive If i want it, i'll will find my way. I get annoyed with people i dont know approaching me. It's like theyre the heat seeking missile having you on locking target.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I don't get roped into talking to them, and don't have a mean face about it or anything- I just find them to be an annoyance. They have all the worst spots .

That area needs refreshing? The entire mall remains the same 35ish years from when it was opened. Ghermezians for you! Inflate promises but don't deliver on legit agreements.

In fact there’s very little of the mall that looks like it did when each phase was built. In my opinion, much of the mall looks far better than it has in years. Same with a couple other malls in the city.

Plus I don’t recall much being worn in the conference area either. (Was last in it last spring.) It was never all that great but that can be said about all of the ones I’ve been to in Edmonton.

From the looks of it, maybe IanO has a point. Time to add some new chairs and some new paint and maybe some new fixtures - but not to all the rooms. There will be a lot of people that still like the look of the place as it is now and won’t like whatever they do / such as painting wall grey as per the latest fad.

The key interiors trends to bring into your home this spring

“House plants also tie in with the 70s revival, which is still going strong on Houzz, with velvet sofas and brass among the top rising search terms. The velvet sofa is a juggernaut of a trend that is showing no sign of stopping, and we’re getting bolder with our colour choices, too - the one gracing the sitting room in the Houzz pop-up, by Red Edition, was a deep burnt orange with caned sides that worked brilliantly against a charcoal-grey wall.

Brass is becoming the metal of choice as we move on from copper and rose gold, particularly when teamed with marble in kitchens and bathrooms. Some are predicting a return to polished chrome this year, but for now we’re sticking with warm metallic tones and matt, brushed finishes.”

The building is so large that it became similar to the national road network. It will alway be under construction.

Yes, exactly. It's like how people on Disney Parks forums complain about all their construction/downtime. Anything that big, and that used, will always need constant work. They'll have fixed up one area just in time for the floors to get cracked by another. Tenants will come & go, leaving certain parts of the mall looking pretty lame.

The mall is still worlds better than the state it was a couple of years ago, when it seemed EVERYTHING needed work. Check out the early pages of this thread, sometime.

Even more so if I hear anyone complaining about the mall. Why criticize a mall for being a mall? It's no regular mall either. It's not perfect, but I'm sure that understandable...

Criticizing and constructive critism arw different. I dont go to that mall as i don't/won't support the Ghermezians. You have your choice.

I dont enjoy large crowds in that manner. I shop at particuliar brick and motar in NYC. Suits and shirts are made custom by my staffs of previous work; now by my staffs. My 150 pairs of dress shoes are more than adequate that leaves groceries and products outside of my industry, so im not missing much. That mall never impressed me innitially. It is big for sure, but not my taste.

Oh, the serious business of message board threads about malls .

Went there today. Nothing much aside from a Judo tournament (which got wrapped up and packed up pretty quickly, actually). It was REALLY busy in some areas, which is part of what always amuses me about their Sunday hours- when the mall closes at six on a Sunday, there are still LEGIONS of people milling around. I'm sure businesses appreciate the shorter day, at least- 11-6 is an easy shift to fill. If they were open later, they'd have to split the shifts up and it'd be more difficult for retailers to fill the hours.

But really, everyone knows that Sunday is the busiest shopping day of the week. They'd make a killing staying open another couple of hours- what else are people going to do?

Though it always amused me when I worked at Zellers way back in the day at WEM- the entire mall could be HOPPING, but we'd be dead as a doornail from 5-9 (when we closed), no matter how busy the mall was. Because nobody wanted to do their "real" shopping then- just the fun stuff. And then 8:55 rolls around, and suddenly you'd see the morons tearing across that wing of the mall at top speed, desperate to reach our doors so they could get to their cars, which were always parked in the huge lot out front. We had great fun slamming those doors shut and refusing them entry (under orders from our security & management, even!), no matter how much they whined. The funniest part was, it's not even that much extra work to walk around! There are doors right to the sides! But nope, they whined and complained about it.

Wow- LOTTA changes at the mall lately.

    * FRESHLY SQUEEZED IS NOW OPEN IN THE WEST FOOD COURT!!! OMG, you guys! That little booth that's just been holding boxes for half a freakin' year is now an actual place that serves... stuff pretty similar to Orange Julius 50 feet away. Well, there's vegetables too, I guess. We'll see how long this one lasts.

    * Winners/HomeSense is opening on the 29th, and the store looks READY on the lower level. This is a fantastic "add", because it takes up half of the "Target Space", which was just killing this end of the mall. A huge, modern-looking shop, too. I'm not a particularly big "Winners" fan (nothing I like, really), but they're nice-looking when they're new, and they're a HUGE draw to malls.

    * Buy Buy Baby is probably pretty close to opening, or has opened- taking up half of the "Target Space" on the upper floor. Basically looks exactly like Babies R Us, but it's the only thing like it in the immediate area, unless you drive down to Terra Losa.

    * Stitches has an "Outlet" in the upper level where Sears used to be, which is a REALLY fast turnaround for that space. And the escalators appear to not be visible from what I could tell, so it looks like they're cutting this space in half as well. Stitches is a pretty low-end retailer of clothes as far as I can see, but it's better than nothing, and some more "discount shopping" isn't bad in a mall that's got a fair bit of high-end stuff.

    * A handful of "opening soon" signs around, like where Scotch & Soda used to be.

Overall, it's looking like there's some decent turnaround.

Went to the mall today, expecting either closing early or it being pretty quiet- instead, it was REALLY busy. As full as any other Sunday. Even talked with one waitress about it, and pointed out how much more money the mall could be making if they stayed open till at least 8 on Sundays. But I guess some employees wouldn't like that. But it's funny- busiest shopping day of the week (and it's not even close), and they close at six.

    * Finally went into the new Winners. It really is nice-looking, though the foot traffic renders the floors a mess immediately. Great selection, and unlike most Winners stores- ROOM TO MOVE! Those places tend to jam every piece of clothing from the warehouse onto the floor, so it's nice being able to have room between things. Their unique brand of "Faux-Expensive" room decor is on display as well- Prints disguised as paintings, so long as you don't notice that the "streaks" are artificial and not real paint! A metal rhinoceros head! Faux-aged dressers!

But yeah, this is a monster shop, and probably going to be a HUGE benefit to the mall. The only trouble they're gonna have is THREE ENTRANCES- this killed the Zellers when I worked in this location. You had to have people stationed around all the exits or theft would be insane. That gets pricey, since it's all day long you have to do this.

    * Supply Sergeant has abandoned their fairly large (but out of the way) store by the Sunrise/Stage area, and moved close to the Bay on the upper level. The new store looks more like their old one (by the Casino), and is probably more well-suited. I dunno what the rent was on that old one, but that store, while large, was actually pointed AWAY from the likely directions of travel for any customer in the mall. How DOES that little wing do, anyhow? That rock store's been there for an eternity, and the wine store is probably its own draw, but still. It's just a Bingo area and some random shops.

    * Kixk or whatever it's called moved elsewhere, and The Bay now has a Kohl's or Kieh's apothecary in the lower level. The names of all these stores are very strange.

    * WEM having to fill that MONSTER space left by MyPet isn't gonna be fun, because it's a huge eyesore being in the corner like that. And so soon after losing Sears! At least this corner of the mall sees a lot of traffic.

Kiehls - it's a very old brand from new york that had one location in NYC, i think it was estee lauder that bought it up and expanded it into a chain in the last 2 decades. Used to be really tough to find, they were carried at Holt Renfrew exclusivly in Canada for quite a while but have become quite common and many of their own stores now. The Hudson Bay locations are usually pretty nice.

RRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH- hate it when this happens: Finally broke down and bought a great figurine at that toy/hobby store on the lower-level by The Bay a month ago, because I worked an overtime shift at work and could justify it... and just today, I found the SAME THING at the convenience store by the food court. For SEVENTY DOLLARS LESS. Seriously- $20 to $40 would have been annoying, but okay. But SEVENTY? I know that shop was adding a bit to the prices, but their Disney stuff was pretty standard-issue as far as pricing went! I had no idea the convenience store would get one of the HIGHER-END pieces!

I mean, these things are hard enough to find that I know you have to snap one up if you really want it, or else you'll never find it again. But man- that's a huge difference in price.

    * Sweet Jezus appears no closer to opening. Honestly, that location is pretty bad, too.

    * Disney Store realigned a huge chunk of their location, putting the Princess/Frozen stuff way in the back corner where nobody ever goes otherwise, while there's a huge, open area featuring summer stuff (giant inflatable Little Mermaid stuff, really). I guess since most little girls make a beeline right for that stuff, this compares to why grocery stores shove the high-interest stuff (milk, eggs) in the back corner- so you have to cross an entire store's worth of stuff to see it. AND it means the least-trafficked area is now something OTHER than a dumping ground, and allows the otherwise-unseen stuff a better spot.

I mean, it makes SOME sense, though I would question hiding your highest-interest stuff so well- right near the tills, in fact.

That would be the biggest sleep country ever.

They could take maybe 1/4 of one floor.

    MAYBE.
    There can only be one.

Yeah, more or less my point, and someone at the store pretty much said so as well. I get the theory. Plus, why NOT put the most-popular items all the way in the back? Otherwise nobody ever bothers to go there!

Don't think so...A friend of mine told me that Burburry staff works at Holt Renfrew, so its probably just for the Holt location. Would be nice to have an actual store though.

Ah, makes sense as some areas of Holt Renfrew are leased areas.

Was there on Saturday, with nothing much new. The North Face story is open, with a pretty generic "clothes on tables and on the walls" design, though very... sparse. I find it kinda weird they have one of these, PLUS the bigger, more elaborate North Face selection inside the Sport Chek. Granted, that one's much harder to get to (you have to go around the corner INSIDE the shop, then upstairs), but it's double-dipping, and this is a REALLY big location as well.

Finally went into Buy Buy Baby- it's a nice-looking shop, though the layout is rather... odd. Really, it's because it's literally cut in half from the upstairs of Target, so it's very square, with the feeling that you're just pushed around the corner from the rest of the mall. The interior is nice enough, with modern-esque designs instead of "generic white tile" like most department stores have. "Fake wood", I guess, for some of it. It's interesting how they added a new parking lot entrance (since Target's was on the other half), around where Zellers used to have its restaurant. It's kind of a mind-screw for me to walk around a place where I used to work, but that now features an entirely different layout.

Now that the Rec Room has been open for a while, I do notice that both it and Ed's are still very busy on Saturday nights, though I'd imagine they're much quieter other nights of the week. But it's a good sign that both can co-exist- I was worried that Ed's would die out with RR being so new, or that RR would turn out to be a bust. It at least makes the mall more entertaining for a night owl like me .

Observation: At the Chicken Whatever restaurant (the piano bar, which rebranded but is the same), all the piano players are fairly average-to-ugly looking males with facial hair, while all the singers are cute women. Kind of a weird "coincidence". Though the only guys I knew who were into piano were using it to get girls back in the day, so handsome guys really wouldn't have ever needed to bother .

Didn't WEM lock their doors due to non payment of rent?

I would not be surprised if WEM itself is running the new pet store. They do run a few stores here and there to avoid vacancies or when it works for them.

    Nordstrom in Canada

The Calgary store opened in Chinook Centre on September 19, 2014,[44] the Ottawa store opened in Rideau Centre on March 6, 2015,[45] the Vancouver Pacific Centre store opened on September 18, 2015,[46] and the Toronto Eaton Centre in 2016. Later in 2016, a second Toronto location was opened at Yorkdale Shopping Centre on October 21, 2016.[47] Additionally, a third Toronto store in Sherway Gardens opened on September 15, 2017.[48] The first Nordstrom Rack opened at One Bloor, Toronto on May 3 2018.[49] Nordstrom is planning to open a full store in West Edmonton Mall, occupying the former Sears location in Phase I. This store is expected to open in fall 2020.

So last week, that "Tacky Luxury Decor" store (possibly not its actual name) had a chained lock around its door, and now it's totally boarded up, as is the jeans/leather shop that was right across from Chapters and the hotel. That one place (I mainly recognized it for the belts that were always hanging in the entranceway) has been there for YEARS. I wonder what the deal is there.

Not really surprised to see the Luxury store die, though. Who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a giant ceramic animal? That looks like something Joey & Chandler had in their apartment!

The "Pet Plus" store has a big, actual, money-costing sign. I'm really curious about the deal there, but I think it'd be rude to just waltz in and ask staff "Yo, how the heck are you people allowed to sell animals again? Didn't you just get closed down? What's going on? PS weren't you all fired?". Right now, they have 2 types of dogs, and two ragdoll kittens.

I was wondering last week why the Rec Room was just DEAD at 10 pm on a Saturday, when it's been busy non-stop every time I've gone in since they built it. Of course, I figured it out pretty quickly- it's the FIRST TIME IT'S BEEN WARM, so people are actually going outdoors and on patios and stuff. I wonder how this place is gonna do now that people have more options in better weather. Because seriously, it's a HUGE difference- it went from 85+ people playing games every Saturday to maybe 35. Empty tables in the restaurant/bar portion as well.

Miniso finally opened up, but I didn't notice it before closing time. Looks like the same stuff that's in the South Edmonton Common location- kind of a more upscale "Oomomo", but with some VERY weird oddities- an obsession with the Pink Panther, cheap toy cars (but not, like, REALLY well-made ones, nor dollar-store crap. Like... $9 cars), and cheap cooking stuff. More of a... $6-9 store? But advertised with a lot of Japanese music and decor.

Went for a WEM visit today. It was relatively quiet, being a Monday weekday.
I'm confused about the Winners/Home Sense on the same CRU. I didn't bother going in.
The Rec Room was empty but noisy, so I shudder to think what it's like when busy.
The upper level of Sears is now a Stitches whereas the lower level is just empty. You ask me, they should just move Famoso and Cactus Club into the latter.
As mentioned before, the Starlight casino is open. Work is still being done at the entrance so that it doesn't look closed. Match pub is open and I gather that an Atlas steak house is coming soon.
Finally found the Oomomo but it's next to a dilapidated info desk.

It's an issue with a lot of animal lovers because the selling of dogs & cats in shops is now considered very uncool, and a way to support "puppy mills" and the like. Part of it is professional breeders angry because people can just buy whatever they want from a store, but a lot of it has to do with animal abuse, as the "mills" simply pump out special-breed dogs without any care given to the animals. And they're somewhat notorious for just putting animals to sleep if they weren't "ideal", or just abandoning them. And this store was one of the last places in Edmonton you could still go to buy dogs & cats- most others are rescue-oriented.

And with this same store having been SHUT DOWN only a couple months ago, losing the entirety of their animal stock... it's a bit off-putting to see it just pop back up again, selling animals like before.

Whats to be confused about it they the same company sharing the space you can clearly see the split between both of them just by the floor and how the walls are painted

Im sorry but what dilapidated info desk are you even taking about the twin screen map thing? if you call the dilapidated then you have extremely high standards for a info board..... they are building a kiosk next to said store though so maybe your mistaking that for an info desk?

I am surprised that Hudson's Bay didn't make a big stink about this (or maybe they did and got nowhere). The Bay sells mattresses and now they will be neighbours. I believe they are even on that floor and just around the corner.
