And we think we have problems with people not giving a s__ about their environment!

Giant plastic 'berg blocks Indonesian river - BBC News

    Excerpts:
“...a longstanding culture of throwing rubbish into ditches and streams has meant that any attempt to clean up needs a massive shift in public opinion.
    ...

"The result is a little bit improved…but I am angry, I am sad, I am trying to think how best to solve this... the most difficult thing is the people's attitude and the political will."

    ...
“Officials are optimistic that word will spread that plastic has value - and raise awareness of the plastic waste problem - but they also admit privately that many residents are either uninterested or cannot see the point.

    ...

The soldiers we filmed had planned to load the plastic onto trucks but because the vehicles never arrived they decided on a different course of action: to use a digger to push the waste downstream.
I asked the sergeant what would happen to it. It was up to another unit to collect, he said. It became someone else's problem.“

It’s easy. A newer neighbourhood a few doors away also gets out and does this cleanup too.

A tad utopian that, Ian. Doesn't mean the effort shouldn't be made, but I doubt a very great deal can be done about these pigs. (Sorry, genuine porcines.)

Walking down 104st downtown yesterday I was disgusted and embarrassed by the condition of the sidewalk and road. Dirt, gravel, leaves and garbage everywhere. To make it worse I passed by a walking tour of out-of-towners and could hear their comments on the filthy conditions. Where are the business owners and residents? I believe it is partially their duty to clean up the side walks in front of their establishments.

I continue to be amazed at how many people wait for the City to 'do this'. We need to all do our part and do it year round/daily/weekly.

    Doesn’t exist anymore.

We still mostly boycott a neighbourhood store where my wife mentioned a pile of litter outside their door and they just laughed.

Also, visited our local playground behind our neighbourhood elementary school for the first time in about a year (our girl now goes to a private school so we don’t go to our anymore).
It was a mess of litter everywhere. For several years I was a regular there with my daughter and always tried to take a dog poop bag to walk the playground area. Never saw another parent ever get off their smart phone to even pick up broken glass.

Done. And my back is killing me. One large orange garbage bag. Mostly junk food wrappers and loads of empty zip lock bags - meaning kids pulling their lunches out and just pitching the plastic on the ground.

When I was a kid, we kids cleaned up the school grounds and my parents had me picking up garbage around the house. Today it’s either a renter attitude or an entitlement attitude.

DECL's annual cleanup snagged around 15 large bags, multiple broken City signs and I swept about 15 blocks. Great to see people care, but still not enough. We all need to do our part.

    That’s excellent news. A.K.A.: Progress.

I wonder: will freezing liquid burst a seam?

We called the City to ask for No Smoking stickers and ashtrays to be installed on our playground structure (shelters several tables). All we got were stickers, most of which have now mostly disappeared. I thought I made the case for the ashtrays but I guess they just didn’t get it. We now have cigarette butts all over and in the playground sand too.

I guess you should keep an eye on your dog then eh? Afterall, there many more harmful things in your neighbourhood your dog can get into that would do much more harm than a reefer butt.

Yes! this would make such a huge difference. Everything from picking up litter to painting over graffiti/gang tags on utility boxes and streetlights.

you could send a few bucks to “downtown proud”. that’s exactly what they do. and they do contract sidewalk snow removal in the winter.

    Bingo.

The property manager does power wash, but they have to respond to a constant issue that is a large question to be answered.

Good on you for sweeping the busted up concrete in front of that rusted out light standard.
Shame on the city for letting what you're sweeping look like that.

Has this year's campaign been "officially" kick started yet? Haven't see Ian in City Hall next to Iveson in a while.....nor did I see the press release in the Journal. I was just home for a few days in a long time and didn't see a sweeper doing the roads nor a unit on the boulevards....yet I the roads Beaumation nation are almost half done as they "purchased" a street sweeper....maybe they can least it to the city to "help out."

St Albert is fully into the boulevard sweeping. And in Edmonton I don't see much happening. some sidewalks yes but not much else. And where the sidewalks were swept the sand sit on the street for weeks before it get picked up. In St Albert there is a team that sweeps the boulevard, another follows and pick it up and then the sweepers follow. all done in one go and moves quite fast. They start with the centre median then move to the sides when it is dryer.

Yes it is small but they have it down pretty good. (they were doing it in about 1979 when I worked for the CoStA.) I recall Edmonton did something similar years ago. Its not rocket science. 2 Street Sweeper, 3 power brushes, a couple of Tandems, a front end loader of some style and a water truck. add a couple of labourers and control vehicles.

I agree, I just love SA, I wish we had moved here sooner..even if most of the signs around us are orange..LOL

Maybe they think the COE workers need more work, the way SA does it is is quicker and far more efficient

Again, the City should have a crew dedicated to obvious downtown issues like this. They’d either decide it’s good as is, clean it up themselves or get the appropriate department to step up its game.

That’s a concrete sidewalk under that sand isn’t it? So it’s just been swept off to the side. (Maybe it’s the best of both worlds in April but should be gone by May.)

I agree, I just love SA, I wish we had moved here sooner..even if most of the signs around us are orange..LOL

Maybe they think the COE workers need more work, the way SA does it is is quicker and far more efficient

StA residents demand that service, which is why they are not as angry as most think about the higher tax rate. The higher $ does come with higher expectations.

...which is what makes me sad about the lack of ownership on the sidewalk Ian shows.

Here in rural Alberta, if it is to be cleaned, it is me that does it. You know, initiative. When we had the in-town business back in the 1980's, Dad would have never allowed this to happen outside the store. Either he or I was out shovelling show, sweeping the walk, or cleaning up. Yes, there were services, but it was about pride in your business.

Great post. You have hit the nail on the head.
No different than the people staring and complaining about the huge puddles of water on the streets. Waiting for the city/ 'somebody' to come along and clear it. Grab an ice pick, grab a snow shovel, roll up your sleeves and just do it. When out walking with my 15 year old, if I see some garbage I'll pick it up and put it in the nearest garbage can... hopefully she's paying attention

Why does it take the city of Edmonton so long to sweep up the sidewalks? Most of the sidewalks north of 153 ave have not been touched. Very dangerous for anyone to be riding a bike or rollerblading.

I will add 118 ave, 97 st, the list goes on. Why do they do one side of the street and not the other, do sidewalks in a neighbourhood but not the transit stops, or the transit stops and not the walking paths in the green spaces? I say this EVERY year but why oh why does it take so long?

And now, with bikes back on city streets the business of riding within 1 metre of the kerb is at its most hazardous with having to plough through half an inch of gravel.
