Very cool. I wonder where the track would be? ...in the river valley from downtown? The track is QC is in old Quebec and surrounded by awesome old buildings.

On a side note, having lived in Quebec, I always thought that there was lots we could do as Edmontonians to embrace winter as they do. Glad to see lots of new initiatives lately.

An true marquee event to build a great winter Festival around.
This needs a real marketing and support effort by the city and province.
Hopefully travel Alberta is awake on this one.

Sounds like the track will likely be in LMP, but I'm thinking Grierson Hill Road.

Can you see the HLB from LMP? I only ask because it will be all lit up and whatnot by then. I'm sure Walterdale will be prominent regardless.

This is awesome news. Very cool. I hope it succeeds and becomes a regular event.

There are a lot of great possibilities for a track here. I think a great one could be set up from - Churchill square to Louise McKinney Park. If the footbridge could be used, the track could go from that park across the river to finish at the Muttart. The Leg grounds would look great on TV as well (especially with the trees all lit up).

Any idea what month this will take place? Edmonton really could use something like this in February or March to break the monotony of winter.

The Quebec event which this is supposedly alternating with was just a few weeks ago (March 20 - 22), so I assume it would be the same timeframe next year.

As for the track, it's 500m, so probably from the top of Grierson or that park just East of the Shaw down into LMP for the finish line/celebration. I wonder if the Edmonton Queen could be used as a stationary venue during this.

    SO MANY POSSIBILITIES!

Does the budget include refrigeration for the ice? If not, anything after mid-February is a gamble.

The heats I've seen from Quebec were all at night, so that reduces the gamble at least a bit, but if I were a betting man I'd put my money on an early March event.

Tensor and Grose interviewed on CHED the minister this morning; he stated that the event is to run in mide to late March and will mostly be bank-rolled by Red Bull, including the track; the track itself will be refrigerated, so a bit of thaw shouldn't be an issue. The minister specifically mentioned that this event will bring tourists at a time when Edmonton normally gets little to know tourist traffic, and will be a good thing to draw people outside in the late winter.

This should be an interesting and fun event to attend. Has anyone attended the one in quebec previously? Do they barricade off all areas and charge to get around it? Can we expect to be able to drink anywhere around the event?

I definitely want to check out the event on the 14th. I've caught it a few times on TV, and it looks absolutely insane. It'd be neat to see some of the racers wearing GoPro cameras like they outfitted the NHL with for the All-Star game.

So, my questions: How will folks get there? Where will viewing be best? If they drive, where will they park?

I ask, because as much as the Tour of Alberta course was a great one, it didn't have a lot of places that anyone who doesn't live downtown could get to and - that and the rain - is why I think attendance suffered.

LRT, park anywhere downtown. Thousands of people attend events at Shaw a Conference Centre every weekend. This is really only closing 1 parking lot (Louise McKinney).

It looks like there will be viewing from inside SCC on multiple levels. Probably some platforms and designated areas down in the park as well as on the patio/terrace of the conference centre.

^Agreed, there is lot of transit connections to downtown. If you do drive, most parkades and surface parking lots are relatively cheap on Saturdays. Since the event is free, the whole thing might not cost you more than a few dollars.

Park in the core and walk or LRT.

There will be viewing much of the route as usual and I am sure they will have a map out with activities and viewing areas soon.

    Tens of thousands are expected.

Okay, all sounds good (and thanks for the Live cam link, will be an awesome course)

But technically so was the Tour of Alberta an awesome course, and say whatever you will about LRT, bus, park etc ....

At Tour of Alberta, there was us and maybe four others watching the Grierson Hill leg (two of them regular brown baggers, if you catch my drift) enjoying a few hours of actual company.

Tens of thousands won't just happen shy of some serious promotional effort. From what I see, so far so adequate at best.

You're comparing cycling in NA as a spectator sport vs Redbull Crashed ice? Seriously? I'm an avid cyclist but the thought of watching it is just past watching paint dry. Couldn't stand watching others cycle and to me its a participation only activity. Not really what I, or most NA consider interesting.

Crashed Ice has a large draw with younger crowds and word of mouth is sure spreading. its a high profile event and it will draw crowds. I imagine theres some product advertising going on currently at Silver Skate festival as well.

The last thing to worry about is draw. The first thing to worry about will be getting a favorite vantage point.

That's going to be one sharp right turn for the skaters.

Red Bull has uploaded a five part series on youtube titled "4 below zero". Basically a preview for the 2015 season.

Gives you a great appreciation for what these guys go through. Awesome production value. The fourth video at the 3:38 mark shows you the layout of the Edmonton track; 465m long with a 45m vertical.

The course will look great on TV - but other than the starting gate and LMP there appear to be limited options where a crowd can actually gather beside the track.

Looks like the crowds will be standing next to the track on the lower half. Plus I'm sure there will be giant video screens to show all the race and a couple Red Bull ads. I look forward to it.

May be while the weather is nice, I'll pop over and scout out the possibilities.

I note that Terry Jones is also wondering. http://www.edmontonsun.com/2015/02/2...d-ice-on-track

Depends how creative they want to get, the roof of the building directly North of the start could probably hold a small grandstand, there will be tons of people inside the Shaw, there is space out on the concrete deck as the track wraps around the building, the loading docks could hold a bunch of people, then as it actually enters the park there is a ton of ground to congregate on all the way down to the river. Fill the Queen with people, etc.

The thing everybody needs to remember is that there will be very few viewpoints where you'll be able to see the entire track, so get a spot where you can see some, and enjoy the atmosphere.

From someone that has attended multiple Olympic bobsled events or Olympic downhills, the plaintiff cries of "where will I stand, how will I see, is a little bit funny.

No run, no matter how its constructed, allows you to see the entire run from anywhere. Attending one of these events in person is about getting the best possible vantage point you can to experience some of the run. To experience the excitement, the choice action that happens near you. The rest will undoubtedly be on video screens and people can also PVR the event for full viewing later.

Its not really about getting a full view of the action its about being there and being part of the party these things are. That said some people will prefer different parts of the track and viewing. Myself I prefer a vantage point that gives a view of a broader segment of track. Going there early is the best way to suss it out.

edit, sorry, What Alex said above as well. I missed that post when I wrote this.

pssst, quiet. That was my spot. lol.

just kidding around. Actually the way this is laid out its pretty good and using the Shaw Conference Center environs was pretty much a way to get the best views out of this.

I haven't been out in the last week to see this but where exactly is the run starting? I really thought they would find some way to get the Mac in the initial starting views. Wonder where they will setup the starting cameras to get that vantage point?

Makes sense! Just read the article in the Journal:

    - 36,000 litres of coolant will be piped through the refrigeration system and a series of flexible tubes covering the length of the track.
Here are a few more track facts Red Bull released Monday:
    - It takes more than 50 people working three weeks straight to built the track and to set up the audio-visuals.
    - The track skeleton has more than 5,000 steel scaffolding pieces and 750 Plywood sheets.
    - 36,000 litres of coolant will be piped through the refrigeration system and a series of flexible tubes covering the length of the track.
    - A team of 12 make the competition ice surface by spraying a fine mist onto the refrigerated mats 24 hours a day for six days.
    - A hot water pressure washing system will be used to flush the track just as a Zamboni would for a hockey rink.
    - An organic crystallizing agent will be added to create ice that’s five times denser than in an NHL rink.
    - After the competition, four 500KW electric boilers will be used to heat the coolant to melt the ice.
    - Two truck access overpass bridges will be built into the course to allow vehicle and spectator access.
    - To ensure that high-definition TV standards are met, 900 500W light fixtures will be installed into the side boards.
    - Sixteen HD cameras will be used during the event, including a helicam and a camera on a six-metre jib crane, and four giant LED screens will be installed along the course for spectators.

I can't think of any way for them to get the Mac in that shot. The start appears to be right next to the Marriott West of Shaw. Basically at the edge of the parking lot.

Swooping helicopter shot of the starting gates to include the Mac?

CKUA is thinking of organizing something on the 5th floor terrace that weekend (heard from the tour yesterday). That terrace can hold about 50-75.

    This track is ridiculous.
I had a quick look today, one of the downslopes makes me want to puke.
