I decided to ride the train northbound the other day and I was quite surprised to see the whole patch of land ready for construction. I was glad to see the roadway from stadium road towards and eventually across the LRT tracks is well underway of being completed. I wonder when that road may open? I also noticed a bit of a plaza being built near the station, are they going to add a new access to the LRT platform?

The road goes through the Park&Ride lot but not across the multi-use path or the tracks. I would suspect that the roadway part of the track crossing will wait until the signal part is done, and even that's not progressed much other than a conduit to the area.

A new ramp from the south end of the station is closer to being ready.

So any progress further since this picture? I think that new rail crossing should be pretty massive of a game changer as it would allow much quicker access to a lot of people to the rec center.

I wouldn't mind another foot crossing was integrated in there in the future either by means of another street artery, or a wide foot crossing to further connect to the other side.

Stadium Station is being rebuilt to eliminate the tunnels and allow access from the ends of the platforms. That will give additional pedestrian crossings at that point.

yeah come concrete park elements were done and some sidewalks and nice old school looking lamp posts were put in. i assume running city services to the site has been completed by now too.

as for the lrt station revamp, it will also make it a lot safer with the underground potion gone

^^Looks interesting. Anyone know why they designed the station to still be an island platform? The look they are going for seems like it'd do much better using side platforms.

There will be no access to southbound trains from the current island platform, southbound trains will be accessed through a new side platform, and northbound through existing platform.

It looks like Stadium is going to be elevated then. I thought there was supposed to be a road overpass out from Stadium road lining up wit 110 Ave NW? Must have heard that wrong.

Elevated? No, they're simply removing the underground access and building a second platform on the west side for the southbound trains. Northbound will use the current platform. Neither platform is elevated in any way. The tracks aren't being moved or modified.

It'll also get rid of the bunker feeling the current station gives off, which by itself will be a massive improvement.

I never felt like it was a bunker, just a bit of "big city" feeling infrastructure in a location that isn't.

The location of the elevators/stairs in the lower level is less than ideal though with lots of blind corners, I can see why it doesn't feel safe.

Indeed it will be nice to see this space be filled up, I also can't wait for the crossing across the LRT tracks opened up, that could also further bring more life to the area.

Me too. The more I look at it, the more I don't see it really being a huge advantageous shortcut for commuters--it's not like 92nd st is heavily used as a shortcut--so it might be great for just bringing life into the area.

Home builders near Stadium LRT Station celebrate groundbreaking Monday

Developers and dignitaries will break ground on a new urban district next to the Stadium transit station Monday, the first step toward a long-awaited transit-oriented community in central Edmonton.

Named after the former Muttart lumber yards on site, the Muttart Urban District will add about 720 residential units and 7,500 square feet of commercial space over three phases.

The first phase of the project will include construction of two six-storey residential buildings and one commercial building. It’s scheduled to welcome the first residents in fall 2020.

The City of Edmonton will cost-share to build two new parks on the 2.4-hectare site north of Jasper Avenue on 84 Street, and a multi-use trail to connect the district to the river valley and nearby existing parks.

I really like this project. And the fact it is smaller is not a bad thing. It will animate a bit of East Jasper but more importantly build what people want in the area as well as add much needed commercial space.

It’s great to see more residential development east of the downtown core. These residences are close to the LRT, Commonwealth Stadium and Recreation Centre, and in reasonable proximity to the shopping centre at 82 Street and 112 Avenue.

A very suburban development. Is is simply wood frame low rise apartment building and a puny amount of retail. There is no "district" as in Brewery or Ice District. Developer is trying, unsuccessfully, so infer this developer is tagged with the sports complexes as a unique "urban district". Sad. Its really a pathetic little development that would have seen low rise construction nil matter what sooner or later.

The architectural controls/initial neighbourhood design has some corner retail and a potential for a bit of a main street.

this is just one development site within the district, not the district. you can find more - including a link to the overall asp planning document - at https://muttartliving.com/ .

i'm interested in what retail might pop up in there. there are enough convenience stores around. another cafe/bakery/pub/restaurant would probably do well seeing how well panini's has been doing lately. could use a hair salon for sure. a vr game room would be sweet.

i'm interested in what retail might pop up in there. there are enough convenience stores around. another cafe/bakery/pub/restaurant would probably do well seeing how well panini's has been doing lately. could use a hair salon for sure. a vr game room would be sweet.
i would guess that most of the commercial amenity space suitable for a hair salon or vr game room will happen on the district's "main street" and not here as this is only about 2,500 sf in total.

i think this is intended to be more of a social space like riverdale's little brick or forest height's cartago.

one can hope for something like those. if more/larger businesses pop up that's even better. the renders aren't very revealing so far but i'm optimistic.

There will be no access to southbound trains from the current island platform, southbound trains will be accessed through a new side platform, and northbound through existing platform.
So, 15 stations on the Capital Line (16 once the brilliant city planners add a second station two blocks away from the current Coliseum, but I digress)

All but one will be serviced by a central platform loading both and north and southbound trains.

But one - did I say ONE loudly enough (?) will have two platforms.

I love this city. It's the relentless river of stupidity that flows from Silly Hall that isn't even surprising anymore that leaves me, well, gobsmacked.

So they're also building another shared use path adjacent to the LRT tracks on the southside to parallel the existing one on the northside? Neat.

I hate to be a negative Nelly, but, only means more space for the homeless to set up their tents.

Somehow, other cities manage to deal with side loading stations. There's a station on the SkyTrain that has 5 platforms, Commercial-Broadway.

    I think we'll manage.

it's better for young trees to root in. keeps dogs from pissing in them and in the winter, the soil doesn't compress as much from the snow, again helping the trees' roots. as the trees age, the mounds will diminish a bit. i'm no expert, but my friend is an arborist. also, looks weird but cool and this area needs both.

Way too many tents especially near the bottle depot there. Sad.

Thanks. With the benches in place there, it looks like its permanent then.

It will be nice for the Park and Ride buses to have another direction to leave after the football game.

not sure about these narrow roads for that. but it will be nice for people to have another direction to walk in from either side of the track.

Helpful for mobility over to Commonwealth Rec Center, which is a big advertised amenity of this project. Provides a feeling of not so much segregation of the LRT tracks.

We segregate people from train tracks to keep them alive.
