Thread: Ice District Tower B | ~150m | Under Construction

Just wish they'd get the height back. The more units, the better. No way is that place in danger of being 'crowded.'

The podium roofline is also different but I cannot say it is better or worse really.
I'm not concerned about the podium. It's the tower.

So for the "Sports Store" I wonder if this could be a new location for Sport Chek?, and if so I wonder what will become of the location in ECC?

^ Looks very much like it, and writing on the wall respectively.

    Big opportunity for ECC?

I don't see that the podium can accommodate the height that Cineplex needs to please its customers...is it going to be underground? Either that or they need to add some height to the 3rd floor of the podium. If ceiling is too low it's going to look crappy. I think they are squeezing too much in there.

Side question: who owns the storage building on the corner of 104th and 102 that is crying out for demolition?

For Reference, Ottawas VIP Theatre (and AVX and more) at the recently finished Lansdowne Park is here (click). I think that this podium might be comparable in height. And it has theaters on floors 2 and 3 (not on the main) so again, comparable.

Edit: Floor plans have the Theatre here on Floor 3 only. I think that this height will be fine, again based on what I've seen here in Ottawa.

They have a Sporting Life and a Whole Foods in Lansdowne Park. Maybe Whole foods will be what the Ice District gets as well.

Yeah, I also don't see the logo anywhere in the new renders.

Theres plenty of height for the theatre. And the theatre is still there. If it wasn't you can be damn sure that Cineplex would require they update the website to remove any reference to their brand ASAP.

Back to the Greyhound site for a construction update:

I think the reality is that all this construction is making us realize how far we have to go. We have some massive projects going on right now, but it seems like they are barely making a dent on the number of empty parking/derelict lots still filling up our city. As exciting as all the new projects are, at the same time it is very demotivating realizing how long it's going to take until our downtown/main corridors are properly filled out and vibrant.

    It's a bit of a reality check.

Jessica Kent said the condo would be 40+ floors on her Stantec Tower piece today and Vinesh Pratap said it would be 47 floors on his.

Global news at 6 also stated 47. If so, still higher than Manulife . Good on height transition between the taller towers.

Just phase 2 of the parkade for now. Lots of work to do from every perspective on Tower E (Stantec) and Tower A (hote) before proceeding onto this.

This building is scheduled to be ready in 2019 so I would think the podium and tower would be started as soon as possible as the dig/getting to grade will take quite some time.

Residences in the last tower are 2020 while the podium stuff (theater, etc) is 2019, so they do have some time on this one.

Yes, until the rain started they were drilling late into the day. The concrete piles with metal I beams inserted are making their way around the perimeter.

    Back to drilling today.

Can someone PM me with instructions on how to post photos? I have looked around and I'm not seeing the instructions on this site.

^ you can't post photos to this site, you have to post them to another picture-hosting site (such as Flikr or Imgur (which I use)) and then link to them using the:

    [img]http://picture.host.com/picture.jpg

syntax. The little button above the text editing field to the left of the "film strip" button helps.

If you use "Reply with Quote" on any message with a picture in it, you can see what's going on.

Looks like digging and regular dump truck pick-ups have commenced a lot on the south part of the site now and the pile drivers have moved to the north part of the lot.

I suspect the dig will move relatively quick on this one.

^^More likely just permitting enough so that they can get working while the design down below is being finalized. I'm sure they know where the lowest slab will be, but if the tower design has been changeing there may be still issues to work out with the foundation.

    188.1 - 149 = 39.1 M height increase

"Add 1,490 sq.m. of Floor Area". Does not say where the floor area being added: residential only or/and an increase in podium, retail. If only residential that might translate into an increase of 12.6 floors if 3.1 M is used as per the guide below. From 43 to back to 55.

Considering this is a thread for the lot where Greyhound was, I'm going to go with no.

    Marriot has always been 192.

Wow, if we're impressed with Rogers Place, just wait until the towers open.

I still say no one should take anything as fact till official renderings are submitted to the DP. I also cannot get any more info on this project as he took a better job in engineering in Austin Texas and is working on highrise builds there.

^oh thank goodness! i had to do a double take this morn when i saw the height was 188 meters. 149 is roughly the height of a lot of what we already have, 188 is significantly higher!

The impact that these 3 towers will make on our skyline will be incredible. 3 over 600 feet . I expect down the road the old casino will top out at about 525 feet 160 m

Yep, the height of the JW Marriott Tower and Ice District Tower B will help Stantec blend in much better.

It just went from 10,000 btu to 14,000 - which is nice considering the growing downtown and hot summers.

Three of the tallest 9 in Western Canada, still including #1 of course.

Three of the tallest 12 outside Toronto, inc #1.

I'm still hoping for an observation tower. I wonder if the major developers ever think about that. Wouldn't a CN type tower, but different, be icing on the cake?

Ya I used to go up there a lot and took friends and relatives. I actually made it up there recently, to Bennett Jones, really made me think of how it was. In 1996 while on a road trip I travelled through Edmonton, Kentucky. I asked the server at the Dairy Queen if she had heard of Edmonton, Canada. She said yes that her class had went up there on a school trip and they had went up to Vista 33 to view the city. How cool is that? I miss that and hope someday to have an entire viewing floor in a tower again. Like I said hoping for an addition to our skyline of a tall tower like CN.

A little over two years ago the city was not in the conversation for a list like this. The scope of what's been done within the two years is staggering. A new skyline doesn't usually pop up overnight. It's a unique time for the city.

Anyone else remember how excited this forum was back in 2008 when the Epcor building (1st office tower here in 20 years) started going up?

The fact that it's hard to keep up with all the major developments now is really exciting.

Thank you Daryl Katz. We should be building a statue of him too. And he's just getting started in his real estate development ventures. Probably announce a 10 tower apt/condo complex on his land downtown one of these days. He has singlehandedly pulled Edmonton up out of the ashes. Without him we likely would not have the new arena and maybe be without the Oilers as well. Our favorite son right now. God bless him.

God bless the man who saw the opportunity to make billions of dollars? Hmmm, I just call that business smarts and nothing else. No statue necessary. The extra $$$ in his bank account is all Katz cares about. He doesn't care about a statue. In fact, given his weird media and public spotlight paranoia, he would probably have ZERO interest in a statue of his likeness being put up praising him for this.

Lol. A very calculated chance. Articles have stated that they had cost/revenue projections decades into the future when they were presenting to city council. The city was surprised as to how well prepared OEG/Katz Group was. Compare that to a proposal like Northlands where projections are kind of an after thought. Katz did his homework. I don't disagree that he is spending billions, but he will also be reaping a lot of cash too. He isn't doing this out of the kindness of his heart - he is still a businessman and didn't make his billions by kissing people's feet.

I don't think etownboarder necessarily hates him, but is stating that praising him is a stretch too. There is such a thing as taking a balanced approach to an issue.

He hates him, look at his history. As for Katz making money in return, I should hope so, he is investing billions of dollars. Would people rather have this?

He has now sold the Rexall drug company for 3.5 B to invest the money in real estate developments so hang on to your hats.

Hard to say how much he is actually investing. Billions have been invested as a result of his initial investment though. There are joint venture partners. Stantec has most likely put a ton of money into its own building, considering they designed and engineered it.

Katz has a pretty diverse portfolio as JayBee points out.

Katz probably isn't doing this development based on thin margins.

I bet Katz would love for you guys to be on city council when he has to negotiate his next deal, though. All I meant is that critical thought is important when looking at the overall deal. Yes, Katz has done tons to improve the area, but that doesn't mean we should give him whatever he wants either. We should remain critical going forward. A lot of the primary elements (underground parking, garbage collection), were designed as such, because city council also had a backbone when they were negotiating this entire development with the Katz Group.
