    In the few old cities I’ve been in, it’s been the narrowest streets and lanes filled with shops that were the most charming and memorable.

    Many of the fascinating narrow streets and lanes are not in fact alleyways they harken back to the historical time before automobiles when foot traffic, and carts were king. So that these places are charming and built on a human user scale. Not like todays commercial avenues build for the Automobile.

    The article, OP, and thread are bait and switch however. This is not at all about what the linked article cites. The article is talking about one development that has occurred and the person who envisioned and built it. .

    The comments in that Vancouver article are more informed than the typical Silly hall idiots that fund such absolutely stupid endeavors.

    jebus, anybody ever walked down backalleys in DT Vancouver? Quick word, DON'T in most places. But especially anywhere East.

    Plus as many people mention most DT Vancouver alleys are service ways, where garbage collection occurs, and where parking access often is.

    I don’t think anyone foresees repurposing all back alleys. It doesn’t need to be an “all or none” endeavour. One, maybe two however might work somewhere.

    I wouldn’t mind the creation of an elevated, maybe covered and heated walkway down the odd back lane where this second or third floor walkway would allow access to underutilized backsides of buildings that could be converted into shops and restaurants etc.

    For sure in limited, specific application it can be advantageous, and imo generally a better place for cafes, patios, away from traffic and noise. But it needs to be permanent, not temp redesign as this city so often loves to do with road and lane closures. We need more people, and not car specific spaces in Edmonton. But again make those permanent.

    Former warehouse districts are great for these kinds of things. Winnipeg has more of that remaining, we demolished some of ours.

    The alleys between 105 St and Gateway in Old Strathcona were mentioned. Could easily be permanent and has great bones for activity and active frontage. Vancouver has Blood Alley and that's about it for activity but Gastown's streets are already narrow enough to encourage intimacy. The Warehouse District can encourage this through zoning and relaxations for providing lane activation (happens elsewhere), also near 104 st Downtown or The Quarters and Rossdale. Put it in the area plan, allow relaxations and incentivize it, and encourage it.
