University of Alberta's only Nobel laureate remembered - Edmonton - CBC News
    Excerpt:

The University of Alberta is mourning physicist Richard Taylor, an alumnus who won a Nobel Prize for groundbreaking research that proved the existence of subatomic particles called quarks for the first time.

"In physics, it's one of the biggest results ever," said Jim Pinfold, a physics professor at University of Alberta who knew Taylor personally.

"The fact that he managed to explain what made up most of the matter in the universe, it's just absolutely incredible.

"This rather humble native son of Alberta."

Taylor died at his home in California near the Stanford University campus on Feb 22. He was 88. ...”

A minor role. And he's more of a musician by far than an actor. The Grammys would be the appropriate place to remember him. Not every person ever in a movie gets remembered at the Oscars.

Here's a list from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that covers a lot more people than made it onto the broadcast. And Adam West is right up front.

I woke up to see if this was posted in Famous Lives Lived...and it was..

The sad comment on the state of things is that this post...on this person...was buried under more political cr....I will just stop there...

This is a physicist who helped us understand just how big the universe is, and just how small we are. Yes, he was a flawed man. Yes, he could be bitter. But, he was human. Like Carl Sagan, the world is not poorer with his passing, it is far richer that he was here. The knowledge, vision, and strength he demonstrated will inspire people for generations to come. In a world where people spend hours yelling at each other over anything and everything, people like Hawking are continually lighting the path to let us understand just how miniscule our problems really are.

I am celebrating the accomplishments rather than mourning the death.

    Saw this on twitter:
Stephen Hawking was born January 8, 1942, on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. He died today, March 14th, on the anniversary of Einstein's birth. Time is circular - no beginning, no end.

I know that Professors at the UofA in the Physics and Cosmology Department who have worked with him personally are saddened by the loss. He lived far longer than expected and was proof that the body may be broken but the mind is truly phenomenal.

A brilliant mind has left us. It really is astounding how long he lived with such a ravaging disease. He died on the day of Einstein's birth, which is somewhat fitting.

    May he rest in peace.

In all likelihood. He announced a lot there. I remember Cowboy Bevs Funtime as a kid. Parents would phone in their kids birthdays and he would congratulate you and tell you where your gift was hidden and other kids programming. Then he had the band Bev Munro and the Babysitters and do a lot of engagements around the city. I think he had his day in Nashville too.

How about he moves back to Edmonton. Katz hires him on to bring the cup back to this city, five or six times would be cool. They make some kind of a deal with ATB for repayment of funds owing. We already know he's the only man that can do it just give him carte Blanche. lol

Mitzi Shore, Comedy Store owner, dead at 87

    https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/11/enter...ary/index.html

The 1970s and '80s were an especially fertile and defining period for standup, and Shore was a key gatekeeper, showcasing performers like Letterman, Jay Leno, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld, Richard Pryor, Garry Shandling, and Roseanne Barr. The holy grail for comics was parlaying that into an appearance on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.

Founder of McBain Camera chain passes away at 94

    Wednesday, May 30, 2018

Ross McBain, founder of the McBain Camera store chain, has died at the age of 94.

Born in May 17, 1924, McBain grew up and lived in Edmonton.

He founded McBain Camera in 1949, which grew to eight locations from the single store on 101 Street – and he continued going to work until a month before his passing.

He was the founding president of the Better Business Bureau; past president of Northlands, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, and the Alberta Aviation Council; and has served as direct of the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club, along with a number of other organizations.

Pretty astounding that McBain has persisted and survived as a bricks and mortar business despite all of the changes in the retail landscape. Even before the internet McBain had to survive all of its other competitors, some with deeper pockets and a larger footprint. A lot of businesses that sold camera and photography gear have come and gone in the city: Saveco, Kits Camera, Astral Photo, Blacks, Japan Camera, Consumers Distributing, Acme, and others that I have forgotten. Plus the chain stores like Futureshop, Bestbuy and London Drugs. And unlike some of its larger competitors McBain only sells photographic gear.

Ex San Francisco 49er receiver Dwight Clark has died at the age of 61 from ALS. He is famous for the "The Catch" that he made at the back of the endzone of a pass from a scrambling Joe Montana that won the 1981 NFC championship game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Super sad to hear the news. Great show and sounded like a nice guy. Traveled the world and it was his oyster but it hid a darkness within. Lots of drug use in his past and one questions how that affects his thoughts. Sorry to see him go.

The younger sister of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has died at her home in the Argentine capital, reports say.

Inés Zorreguieta was 33 and is understood to have taken her own life.

She was bridesmaid at her sister's wedding to then Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002 and is godmother to their youngest daughter, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

They were both fully capable of thinking through the consequences of their actions so I have to assume that they weighed the various outcomes and chose the option they wanted the most.

Yeah, because suicide is a logical and rational decision, never taken on the spur of the moment or when a situation seems hopeless. People sit down and work out the pros and cons and then make a fully informed decision to hang themselves.

    Happens all the time.

Obviously you have never been extremely depressed to the point that you want out, if you think they were capable at this time of thinking about their children, you are wrong..

If it was at all contempted then certainly they would have thought about their children. Then they made a decision. It may not be one the average person is comfortable with, or understands, but a lot of people act in their own interests on all kinds of other issues, so why not this?

Well, some severe problems reflected here (see below) but the derogatory label that comes to my mind is supreme *******. Addicts deserve compassion and treatment. Addicts that casually and repeatedly put other innocent lives at risk need to be prevented from doing so if they don’t do so themselves. If by mid-life one does something extremely stupid I’d expect it to only happen once, at most twice, and then some introspection, recognition, empathy among other basic mature human thinking should kick in.

Harlan Ellison was a huge deal and a huge influence in the SF world as well as being a hugely divisive figure. Here three pieces by the people placed best to talk about him, his peers.

    Neil Gaiman: Harlan Ellison
John Scalzi on the famously curmudgeonly and irascible Harlan Ellison
    Cory Doctorow: RIP, Harlan Ellison
