^The former Air Canada Center is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment which also owns the Toronto Raptors NBA team and Toronto FC of Major League Soccer (as well a few condos etc). MLSE is an unholy alliance of Rogers, Bell, and Larry Tanenbaum.

Ontario Teachers pension sold most of that off as I mentioned. Thanks for validating what I already knew

So the Flames pick up James Neal. Jesus. Where were the Oilers in all the free agent signings?

This story broke a few days ago. They signed Kyle Broadziak and Ryan Strome. Karlson from Ottawa Senators is still available but Dorion etc. are in no hurry to move him.

Karlsson would fit in nicely with the Oilers. If we only had a bit more cap space he could be the key to Stanley. Toronto gets Tavares. Lucky for them. Karlssons not a free agent though, would have to give up a lot. Rumour is Yzermans got a handle on him.

^ Possibly, although I'm no expert. I'm still whining over the loss of Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle. Imagine if the Oilers had the cap space to have kept
Eberle, and Hall? That of course would destroy the Oilers cap space, lol.

Off to the side trying to figure out how to get rid of 2-3 really bad contracts: Lucic, Russell, and Sekera. Unless they get rid of one or two of those, they are out of the big fishy free agent market for years.

Delete the awful contracts of Milan Lucic and Kris Russel and the Oilers magically have enough cap space to keep both players.

Yes, and those reasons were bad at the time those trades were made. The organization turned a premiere, top 5, future Hart-winning left wing and a very good first line scoring winger in to a second pairing defenseman and a third line checking center. Again, there's lessons to be learned there.

Moving on from the Oilers past trades

So now...how's that Erik Karlsson trade going with the sad-sack Senators?

Sens have no vested intrest to move Karlson anytime soon. I'd opine if Lucic and maybe someone else for Karlson might be a good short term deal for the Oilers.

    ^^ Exactly.

I wonder if Nicholson is having 2nd thoughts over Chiarelli. I know I am.

Good deal for the Oilers for sure. Ottawa wants no part of Lucic though. He doesn't help with their rebuild.

^ Oilers would still have to continue with Lucic's salary wouldn't they?

Oilers might have Scotty Upshall in the line up if all goes well. Connor is excited by it.

If Lucic is traded his contract goes with him, I think. Upshall is 35 Oct 7 and averages 10 goals a season. Role player, penalty killer.

Heh, it's been like that for as long as I can remember. I was actually just listening to TSN1260 at lunch, and even the guys on the radio were saying they were glad that McDavid didn't go to Toronto, are not looking forward to constantly hearing/seeing wall to wall coverage on Tavares etc. Even people on TSN are aware of it. That's what happens when a single city is nearly 20% of the entire country.

Too some degree its like this with Primetime sports with Bob McCown. Though to be fair to bobcat, they cover the national all sports scene as best they can. They had the coach of the Winnipeg jets on earlier this week and the big contract Blake Wheeler signed for.

not to be overly picky but the city is about 8% of the entire country and the metro region about 16%... (just picky, not overly picky ).

having said that, i'm not sure it's about the size of the population as much as it's about where the reporters are. if you were to look at the print or magazine or television coverage in northern alberta and you lived in drayton valley or white court or high level or athabasca or st. paul etc., you'd probably feel the same way about all of the coverage being edmonton centric. i don't even think it's that intentional as much as it is "out of sight/out of mind".

Except, in the good old Excited States of Uhmurikka, the networks still cover the Tennessee Titans, Ol' Miss, Green Bay Packers ...etc.

One of the reasons I stopped watching baseball is when the CBC decided that no one in English-speaking Canada would ever want to watch the Montreal Expos when they could instead be treated to the amazing centre-of-the-known universe TORONTO Blue Jays.

This from the network whose mandate is to unite Canada.....

Max Pacioretty is headed to Las Vegas. In return for the captain and left winger, the Habs get forwards Tom Tatar, 27, prospect Nick Suzuki, 19, and a second-round pick in 2019. .

After a long summer of speculation, the Ottawa Senators have traded captain Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks.
The return includes several picks and prospects. In exchange for Karlsson, the Senators receive four players — forward Chris Tierney, defenceman Dylan DeMelo, and forward prospects Josh Norris and Rudolfs Balcers — as well as a first-round draft pick (2019 or 2020) and a second-round pick in 2019. If the Sharks miss the playoffs in 2018-19, that first-rounder will be in 2019; otherwise, it’s a 2020 first-round pick that will go to Ottawa.

The Sharks also acquired forward prospect Francis Perron in the trade.

Not to be too picky but if you subtract the population of Quebec the population of the golden triangle would be about 32% of TSN’s market.
    37mil - 8.2 = 28.8. 9.2/28.8 x 100 = 31.94%.

Poor Erik will have to live in the beautiful Bay Area of California now. Some people have all the luck. Hope his ankle has healed. He could really help the sharks. According to PC Edmonton failed to make his trade to list or we could have gotten him.

Good move by Saint Albert city council to change the Akinsdale Arena to the Jarome Iginla Arena. I've always liked this player. I know parts of the family well. Too bad Igy played on the wrong side of the "Battle of Alberta,"

Sometimes we get caught up in the glow of Connor McDavid, and fail to give enough credit to the other great players in the game that will never be considered superstars.

Sasha Barkov was a beast against the Oilers the other night. Someone called him a younger version of Kopitar. Really strong on his skates, and good at everything. No weaknesses. Great player who sacrifices points for wins the way Toews changed his game in his initial seasons.

And, tonight, I watched Travis Hamonic play a beast of a game against the Kings. The Kings colour guy (the best in the game, along with Mike Johnson, in my opinion) kept pointing it out, and it went on all game. He said it was the best performance by a defenceman he'd seen all season.

The Buffalo Sabres are a good team. The Islanders are playing great. The Habs can score. Detroit is nowhere near as lousy as I though they'd be. Vancouver are playing awesome. Pettersson has been a revelation. Colorado are proving last year was no fluke. MacKinnon is great, but how about Mikko Rantanen?

Max Domi is playing lights out at centre. 9 goals and 21 points already. He only scored 5 last year, with a goalie in the net.

Chicago, Anaheim, and LA, are in free-fall (good news for the Oilers).

    Who guessed that?

Things are going pretty bad for Oil right now.

But these two players have an Oilers connection.

Look how Petry (Petry!) is three strides behind Seguin and blows past him like nobody's business.

Start of a shift, so Seguin isn't tired. Not caught flat footed. Just as slow as molasses.

Seguin supposed to be one of the NHL's elite players. Wow.

Let's all look back and remember how the Oilers flushed Petry for basically nothing because he wasn't tough enough for management. And consider that said management still collects Oilers' paycheques for some odd reason, even if their title has changed (several times).

Been watching playoff highlights. CBJ surprising the bolts. I like the Caps 2-0 in their Carolina series. Looks good on them, bunch of jerks. Looking like the jets are a goner with their two losses in the peg to the blues.

Isles and jackets both win again today. They both have a stranglehold on their series. Presidents trophy winners Tampa bay have their backs to the wall. Perennial favorited Pittsburg as well. The jets finally win one over the blues and Vegas is leading against the sharks in the late game.

Tampa Bay Lightning are a goner. Swept out by the jackets. Wow. Penguins swept out by the Isles. Wow. Winnipeg ties series. Knights blast sharks to take a 3-1 lead in series.

This post didn't age well. What a complete disaster Neal has been. An absolute passenger. A worse than Lucic player. (Neal's own zone awareness is atrocious. ) He either completely doesn't care how many times opposition score with him staring at the play or he doesn't have the slightest sense of what to do on a play.

lol at last night overtime goal. Flames have numbers back. Lanes are covered. except one of the players is named James Neal, and he's thinking about booking flights out to Maui instead of covering a passing lane. I mean somebody tell me what he's even doing on the play.

I think Neal as cosigned by Colorado and none of us know. Neal should just retire at this point. What an imposter of a player. This is now the kind of player you WANT to see on the opposition.

There was something gratifying about Rantanen's OT winner last night, though. ABC, me.

Avs are going to be a very good and exciting team to watch for a long time. MacKinnon's contract is probably one of the best in the league. 4 more years at 6.3m for a consistent point a game or better player is ridiculous. On the flip side, they'll have to pay Rantanen, but that's a very good problem to have.

As far as Neal goes, it's yet another demonstration of why teams are only hurting themselves signing guys in their late 20's to long term contracts. Players peak from about 22-26 years of age, especially offensive ones. After that, it's all downhill, although there's of course statistical variability and the occasional exception. Less so in the case of less dynamic D-men and goalies, but those aren't generally the ones getting the big long term deals. The David Backes deal is similarly horrible, and was also signed when he was 29 or 30. He's been a healthy scratch in the playoffs, at 6m a year.

That being said, I don't think any of those other similar contracts are structured anywhere near as badly as Lucic's is in terms of signing bonuses making the contract buyout proof. Props to his agent for getting that structure and shame on PC for giving it to him. Lucic's is 60% signing bonus, Backes' is about 40% signing bonus, and Neal's is 0. So at least Calgary can reasonably get rid of him, although it'd be 8 years of a 2m penalty if they did this offseason. Backes' is ugly for the first year as there's no cap savings and a pretty hefty hit in the 2nd year, followed by 2 very small cap hits. Lucic has 4 years of massive cap hits followed by 4 more years of reasonable ones: https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-c...-lucic#results

So that being said, I'd rather have Neal's contract than Lucic's if I was a GM. Both won't or at least shouldn't be in the NHL in a year or two. At least with Neal's you can get out from under it without a huge amount of short term pain, although the final years' cap hits are larger for his contract.

Atually only ~ 11% of Quebec's oil comes from SA:

Getting back to hockey, I can just imagine (and the cap hit) if Oilers had Ebs in the line up today. With the Islanders momentum, they could go to the Eastern Conference finale now that TB is out.

Or wherever then. Im thinking the Kings wont be doing much better than the oilers. Ebs is doing ok but maybe its the trade that got him going. Maturing too. I like the Isles too. Amazing what is happening in the eastern conference with Tampa and Pittsburgh both being swept out in four straight. Whodu thunk it.

I hope they set the cap at $100m. The owners seem to be throwing money around and this would enable the weaker teams that are nearing the cap to sign a few good men. (Example: Oilers)

It's good to see Eberle getting some production in the playoffs, and it'll certainly put some extra dollars and term on whatever contract he's able to negotiate this summer. Just goes to show why it's a mistake to make such big decisions on limited sample sizes. That being said, he's 29 in a month and is coming off the worst regular season of his career. He was never an overly fast skater, and with the league continuing to get faster and him getting older, I'd be pretty reluctant as a GM to give him much term in a contract offer.

As far as the Kings go, it makes perfect sense that they "won't be doing much better than the Oilers". They're a declining team after having won 2 Cups in 2012 and 2014. That tends to come with a hangover in the cap-era NHL. Look at Chicago. Even Pittsburgh. Maybe McLellan can get them back in to the playoffs, maybe not. The heavy lifting in LA is going to be Rob Blake's job in trying to rebuild on the fly, as they do still have some pretty good pieces. But those pieces are rapidly diminishing assets at this point.

@ H.L I haven't been following much this year either, waiting for the 2nd round to get underway. I think game 4 is tonight for the Jets are down by 1 game 2-1 Blues. I think.

Being first not only gives the club home ice advantage but also a chance to face a team they can win against to advance to the 2nd round. In theory.
